When we talk about sightseeing near Pleven, we cannot but start with Devetashka Cave. Located 15 km northeast of Lovech, it should be one of your first stops to visit if you are looking for natural attractions around Pleven. It is included in the National movement “Explore Bulgaria – 100 National Tourist Sites” under number 30c.
The Devetash Plateau is rich in caves, Devetashka was discovered in 1921. In 1966 it was declared a natural landmark. Today it enjoys great interest from locals and tourists and is among the most visited caves around Pleven.
It is accessible by a trail that is over 1 km long, and most interestingly, it is home to thousands of bats. More than 30,000 individuals winter here. The Devetashka Cave is entered through a gallery that is gradually expanding. You will find yourself in the largest cave hall in the Balkans.
The visit to one of the most famous sights around Lovech is for an entrance fee. Pupils, students and pensioners enjoy a discount. Discounts are also available for large groups of more than 15 people. If you decide to visit, please note that visits to the Water Gallery are limited from 1 November to 1 April. The Dry Gallery, on the other hand, is not open for visits from May 25 to July 31.
The Devetashka Cave and the Krushuna Falls s are located 20 minutes by car from each other. The waterfalls get their name because of their location near the village of Krushuna in Lovech, and the interesting history of Krushuna Falls can be traced back to the 13th-14th centuries. Preserved rock niches and cells testify that there was a monastery of monks-missionaries on this place.
Krushuna Falls is actually a series of several waterfalls. The largest and the first is called Praskaloto. It is 15 metres high. Together with two smaller waterfalls, they form the Krushuna Falls, also known as the Maarata area.
There is a paid parking area at the trailhead where you can leave your car. Krushuna Falls admission is likewise charged. Children under the age of seven enter free of charge. Students are eligible for discounts. Krushuna Falls, a Maarata Natural Landmark, is one of the 100 national tourist destinations. At the ticket office, you can get a stamp with the number 30g.
The trails are well maintained and marked, which will make it easier to find your way around. You will probably meet other tourists as well, as this is one of the most visited attractions near Pleven and Lovech in summer. The walk will take about one and a half to two hours – depending on your pace.
The next interesting places around Pleven that we will tell you about are actually located in Lovech. Be sure to take a trip to the city of lilacs and visit some of the most interesting sights in Lovech. The city is located only 35 km from Pleven.
Translated, Varosh means outer town, and the district of the same name is the main part of the Varosha Architectural and Historical Reserve. The houses of famous Bulgarian revolutionaries, churches, museums, monuments and galleries are located here. The Vasil Levski Museum and the Lovech Zoo are also located here. The total number of registered historical, architectural and cultural monuments exceeds 200.
The unique appearance of the reserve is largely shaped by the still preserved Renaissance houses, built in a style typical for the region of Lovech.
The Vasil Levski Museum in Lovech will definitely thrill you with national pride. Make a point of passing through the city while you are there. The Apostle’s Museum is part of the Lovech Regional History Museum and ranks 30th among the Hundred National Tourist Sites. It was built in the middle of the twentieth century, in 1954. A photocopy of the Apostle’s personal notebook is maintained here, as is Philip Totyu’s firearm.
The unique museum of Vasil Levski can be visited all year round. It is open without a day off. From April to October, it is open from 9:00 to 18:00, with a break between 13:00 and 14:30. The exhibitions are open from 08:00 to 17:00 for the rest of the year (November to March). The break is scheduled between 12:00 and 13:00. Students and seniors can get tickets at a discount. You may also lose your family package.
You may learn about the Apostle’s revolutionary activities by visiting the Kakrina Inn. This is one of the destinations that every Bulgarian should visit at least once in their lifetime. RHM-Lovech also owns and operates the Kakrina Inn Museum. It is located in the village of Kakrin. The curators recount the story in a fascinating way, demonstrating a love of history and the Deacon’s work.
The Zaptiers captured Levski at this location. Following his execution, the inn became empty. A substantial portion of the building was damaged by fire around the end of the nineteenth century. Later, patriotic Bulgarians renovated it. Today, the Kakrina Inn is available to the public from Monday to Sunday.
The site has the same opening hours as the Vasil Levski Museum. Again, we recommend buying a family ticket. Pick up the booklet to add another stamp to your collection. The Kakrina Inn has found a place in the Hundred National Tourist Sites of the Bulgarian Tourist Union under number 30a.
